Smith a frequent visitor to criminal justice system

Charles Maner Smith was a frequent visitor to the local criminal justice system with felony convictions dating back to 2003, Chatham County Superior Court records show. Smith was shot and killed by Savannah-Chatham officer David Jannot just after 11 a.m. Thursday on Augusta Avenue between Eagle and Cummings streets. Cyrus Purdiman, assistant special agent in charge of the GBI’s Statesboro office, said Thursday that Smith was arrested on outstanding warrants, but did not detail the nature of the warrants. Court documents reviewed Friday show Smith’s encounters with the legal system date back to a juvenile court hold on March 6, 2001. Smith, 29, also has been indicted under the middle name of Manor, court documents show. His latest felony convictions were on July 14, 2011, when he pleaded guilty to an aggravated-assault charge in the Oct.
