Colorado Springs-area foreclosures continued to head in the right direction last month - down.Foreclosure starts totaled just 112 in September, one more than in August and a decline of 18.8 percent from the same month in 2013, according to a report Wednesday by the El Paso County Public Trustee's Office.For the first nine months of 2014, foreclosure starts totaled 1,379, an 8.5 percent drop from the same period last year.Property owners who miss several mortgage payments typically are served with a foreclosure notice, which starts the legal process that can lead to the loss of a home or other property.The recession, combined with a housing downturn and non-traditional mortgages issued to homebuyers with shaky credit histories, resulted in a surge of foreclosure activity in El Paso County starting in 2007.Annual filings hit a record total of 5,288 in 2009, but have declined each year since as the economy and housing market have recovered.Read more on Colorado Springs Gazette
