Comment on Thousands drawn to debut of Hermann Park garden

Thousands of nature-lovers gathered at Hermann Park Saturday to celebrate its 100th anniversary with the unveiling of a new eight-acre garden, complete with a an extravagant pavilion and a massive 30-foot "mount" that gives garden-goers a panoramic view of the park's landscaping and surrounding museum district. Visitors are greeted into the park through an 8,000-square-foot entryway known as the Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion, which was designed by renowned architect Peter Bohlin. After interviewing seven well-known architectural firms, Bohlin personally interviewed for the position after winning a gold medal from the American Institute of Architects. The 30-foot platform stands directly across from Bohlin's pavilion and includes a massive waterfall that extends down the circular trail visitors follow to get to the top. The mount overlooks the centennial gardens that include a children's garden, rose garden that features antique heritage roses and a celebration garden that people can rent for special occasions. Visitors started the day with a ribbon cutting ceremony and enjoyed garden tours, children's activities sponsored by Macy's and live performances from local artists.
