In the late summer of 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast. Although nearly 1,000 miles away, Wilmington felt the impact. It was not cyclonic winds but closed gas stations that rocked Wilmington after the storm damaged refineries. Those area municipalities and businesses with private fuel storage facilities continued to function.
