Bay Area Consumers’ Checkbook and Checkbook.org evaluated local shops, collecting more than 15,000 customer surveys and more than 2,000 price quotes using undercover shoppers, and checking complaints at consumer agencies. To replace the water pump on a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE, prices quoted to Checkbook’s mystery shoppers ranged from $410 to $1,809. [...] if the car is still not right after you pick it up, notify the shop in writing immediately. The Chronicle is working with Bay Area Consumers’ Checkbook magazine and Checkbook.org, a nonprofit consumer group that rates various types of local service firms, stores and professionals, to help you find the best services in the Bay Area. Chronicle readers can read Checkbook’s full article on auto repair shops, with advice on choosing and dealing with a shop, and (for the next four weeks) use Checkbook's ratings and price comparisons of 531 Bay Area auto repair shops, free of charge, at www.checkbook.org/chronicle/autorepair.
