Top auto repair shops don’t cost more

Bay Area Consumers’ Checkbook and Checkbook.org evaluated local shops, collecting more than 15,000 customer surveys and more than 2,000 price quotes using undercover shoppers, and checking complaints at consumer agencies. To replace the water pump on a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE, prices quoted to Checkbook’s mystery shoppers ranged from $410 to $1,809. [...] if the car is still not right after you pick it up, notify the shop in writing immediately. The Chronicle is working with Bay Area Consumers’ Checkbook magazine and Checkbook.org, a nonprofit consumer group that rates various types of local service firms, stores and professionals, to help you find the best services in the Bay Area. This marks the first time that cosmetic procedures have been associated with an HIV outbreak, according to a detailed report of the outbreak investigation published today. Ars reported on the cluster last year when state health officials announced they were still identifying cases linked to the spa despite it being shut down in September 2018.
