Dynasty or not, Sabean has built a Hall of Fame-worthy product.

Sabean has been the National League’s biggest winner during his tenure, building four World Series teams and reaching the playoffs four other times, in addition to his crucial role as a scout and executive leading up to the Yankees’ glorious run that began in 1996. The traditionally second-rate St. Louis Browns (later the Baltimore Orioles), who won 89 games — and the only pennant in their 51-year history — in an American League season carrying a huge asterisk with so many stars serving in World War II. Throughout history, starters have performed heroically in World Series relief, including Smoky Joe Wood, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Allie Reynolds, Harry (The Cat) Brecheen, Catfish Hunter (Game 7, 1972 against the Reds) and Randy Johnson. Walter Johnson, after starting Games 1 and 5 for the Washington Senators in 1924, pitched four shutout innings of relief on one day’s rest and got the win in Game 7 against John McGraw’s New York Giants. In 1958, the Yankees’ Bob Turley shut out the Braves in Game 5, got the final out for a save in Game 6, then came out of the bullpen on two days’ rest to relieve Don Larsen in the third inning of Game 7 and went the final 62/3, allowing just one run and picking up the win .
