Mobility may be hindering development of Kaepernick, Griffin III

The 49ers’ timing-based West Coast offense under Bill Walsh has often been likened to a symphony, but it routinely hit discordant notes when Steve Young first became the quarterback. Thanks to Walsh’s directive to “exhaust the play,” Young, 53, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, evolved into something of an anomaly: a mobile quarterback who doubled as an elite pocket passer. Of the 10 quarterbacks with the most rushing yards in NFL history, only Young and Daunte Culpepper rank in the top 20 in career passer rating or completion percentage. In Young’s estimation, the ability to run can hinder a quarterback’s development as a pocket passer. Young points to two legendary lead-footed quarterbacks — New England’s Tom Brady and Denver’s Peyton Manning — as masters who entered the NFL with an edge on their more athletic peers. Young believes they could dominate the NFL if they earn their Ph.D.
