Snow, black ice trigger dozens of accidents early Friday

Staff reports Light snow and sub-freezing temperatures early Friday set the stage for dozens of vehicle accidents across the Kanawha Valley, according to personnel at the Metro 911 center.Between 4 and 8 a.m. Friday, dispatchers responded to 26 accidents, 10 involving injuries, on Interstate 64 between Nitro and Charleston. Accident numbersw diminished as temperatures warmed above the freezing point by 9:30 a.m.State Department of Highways crews early Friday were treating roads and bridges across western West Virginia with salt to eliminate hazards from snow and black ice.High temperatures in the Kanawha Valley will remain in the upper 30s today, but are expected to reach the upper 50s by Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
