Family guides 'Foxcatcher’ portrait of wrestlers’ tragedy

When director Bennett Miller first approached Nancy Schultz five years ago about his plans to make a movie about her late husband, champion wrestler Dave Schultz, he told me 'Foxcatcher’ would be just very loosely based on Dave and his brother Mark’s story. [...] the more Bennett uncovered the facts, talking to me and people in the wrestling world, he learned how dramatic their actual story was. [...] what he’s done is ridiculously accurate, Schultz said during a recent interview with her son, Alexander; daughter, Danielle; and nephew Mark Schultz Jr., in her San Carlos living room. Just 11 months apart in age, they “understood each other like twins and were inseparable, pushing each other hard on and off the mat,” says Nancy, 55, who met Dave at the University of Oklahoma where he was an All-American wrestler and she was a competitive gymnast. Yet 12 years after the Bay Area brothers’ Olympic wins, their names became well known outside sports circles for Dave’s incomprehensible murder by deranged multimillionaire John E.
