Bhutan is remote and largely untouched by Western influences. New roads, public education and other modern enterprises will undoubtedly change the rich cultural heritage of this unique kingdom. Observing Bhutan’s four pillars of “gross national happiness” — equitable and equal socioeconomic development; preservation and promotion of cultural and spiritual heritage; conservation of environment; and good governance — in everyday life. Visas are only issued to authorized tour operators. Long-sleeved tops, as visits to many sacred sites required the arms to be covered. The hike to this sacred monastery was steep (10,240 feet at the destination) and the trail was messy.
