Knicks crush Lakers

With Kobe Bryant out for the season and both teams among the worst in the NBA, it was anything but a Super Sunday in New York, where the national TV audience that originally was scheduled to see the game missed the Lakers shooting 35.5 percent from the field. Hassan Whiteside scored half of his 20 points during a dominant stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters and the visiting Miami Heat beat the Boston Celtics 83-75. The 49ers have hired Aubrayo Franklin, 34, an 11-year NFL veteran, as an assistant defensive line coach. Lionel Messi and Neymar each scored a goal to ensure Barcelona remained in the hunt for the Spanish league title. In England, the fight for Champions League qualification from the Premier League intensified Sunday, with Arsenal dismantling Aston Villa 5-0 in its biggest win of the season and Southampton surrendering third place after a surprise 1-0 home loss to Swansea. Only five points separate third-place Manchester United and seventh-place Liverpool with 15 games remaining, in what is shaping up to be a scramble for the final two Champions League spots behind the top two of Chelsea and Manchester City.
