Fire breaks out at metal recycling company in Portland

A large pile of crushed cars and scrap iron was burning Tuesday afternoon at a recycling yard on Riverside Street, Portland fire officials said Assistant Fire Chief David Jackson said the fire started at 3:15 p.m. at Schnitzer Northeast at 568 Riverside St. Jackson said the metal recycling company was using its own crane and heavy equipment to move material that wasn’t burning away from the fire. “There was quite a bit of fire in the pile,” Jackson said.
