Gloucester Blueways project links paddlers to water access

Gloucester Blueways started with various partners in 2012 as a way to introduce tourists and locals to five possible kayaking and canoeing routes covering 40 miles of the county's five rivers and tributaries. The map and brochure is a marketing tool for those businesses in addition to getting the word out about Gloucester's natural amenities, which in turn may bring more visitors. [...] the Yacht Haven, located on Sarah Creek near the mouth of the York River, is planning to rent kayaks, paddleboards and canoes starting Memorial Day weekend, she said. Under the new ownership of Dallas-based Suntex Marinas, the Yacht Haven is also adding horseshoe pits and volleyball nets in addition to finishing up renovations of an activity room. The idea behind the blueways brochure is to let the public know where they can stop — typically on county-owned land and avoiding private property — and the locations of launches, trash cans and other amenities. Additionally, the brochure shows beginner, intermediate and advanced routes in addition to providing information about historic sites and wildlife. When she and her father started the guided kayak tour business in 2012, Alexander had already mapped out routes and volunteered to help Gloucester with its original blueways trails. Visitors to Jellystone often bring their own kayaks and canoes to access the Severn River, various creeks and Mobjack Bay, but the Gloucester Point campground also rents out kayaks, paddleboats and aqua trikes, which are new this year, he said.
