Brett Lawrie’s slide into Alcides Escobar still a hot topic for Oakland A’s, Royals

Brett Lawrie’s slide into Alcides Escobar still a hot topic for Oakland A’s, Royals Brett Lawrie’s hard slide into second base in the seventh inning on Friday was still the primary topic of conversation on Saturday at Kauffman Stadium. Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar was injured on the play, and he was not in the lineup on Saturday because of a mild left knee sprain, though Escobar said that he wanted to play and believed he probably could. The specifics of the slide were still under discussion, with Escobar calling it a dirty play and Lawrie repeating what he’d said Friday, that he was trying to break up a double play. Lawrie said he believed the double play was a possibility because the ball, hit by Josh Reddick, was smashed up the middle. The ball was deflected to third baseman Mike Moustakas, and Moustakas flipped it to Escobar, the play developing later than Lawrie, a fast runner, anticipated. A’s manager Bob Melvin agreed, calling the play “a perfect storm” for a potential injury. To be able to think that quickly when your instinct is to break up the double play, the intention wasn’t to hurt anybody. On the Kansas City side, no one spoke directly about the slide, but several players noted that in a late developing play such as Friday’s, a pop-up slide would prevent anyone from being spiked, at the very least. Escobar said that he never received an apology from Lawrie, so Lawrie showed his text to a reporter and to an A’s PR person along with the response from a person Lawrie presume to be Escobar, since that was the number he’d been given. When asked for clarification from Royals PR director Mike Swanson, Escobar reiterated that he never heard from Lawrie and showed Swanson his phone with no text from Lawrie.
