Günter Grass, Germany's post-war conscience, dies at 87

Günter Grass, 87, the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Tin Drum and other novels that made him known around the world as the moral conscience of 20th-century Germany - a reputation that faltered when he belatedly revealed that he had served as a young soldier in Hitler's SS - died Monday at a hospital in Luebeck, Germany.
