SPRINGFIELD -- More than 1,400 specialty license plates featuring an image of President Barack Obama have been purchased in Illinois in the past month. The 60-day plates, which sell for $50 a pair, have raised $50,000 for the Illinois Library Association, a 2010 summer reading program. The program provides catalogs and brochures to local libraries encouraging youths to continue reading during the summer months. Library association chief Robert Doyle said the idea for Obama plates originated in December in the secretary of state's office.
