Rockets out to show that Houston is still Clutch City

The Houston Rockets are down two games to none to the Warriors. [...] the Rockets will need to be very clutch at home — will need to tap into their NBA past, both recent and ancient — to get back into this series. The Rockets seem to thrive when the heat and airlessness in a series become suffocating. The Rockets rallied back from the dead against the Clippers. 17 months earlier the Oilers blew a 32-point lead in the NFL playoffs, losing to the Buffalo Bills in overtime. The catchphrase is even emblazoned on a T-shirt that is an unabashed ripoff of the classic Warriors “The City” logo. Nothing has come easily for the Warriors, who spent so much of the regular season on cruise control. The key for us going into the next game is to protect our lead down the stretch because we’ve built up seven-, eight-point leads in the last two games and made it a little too drama-filled. The Rockets are one of the few teams whose post-relocation nickname makes sense, unlike the Utah Jazz or the Memphis Grizzlies. The Rockets were originally in San Diego and moved to Houston, the home of the NASA’s Johnson Space Center, in 1971, becoming the first NBA team in Texas. There isn’t much sports history shared between the Bay Area and Houston. Warriors great Rick Barry ended his career in Houston, signing there as a free agent in 1978. There was the time Barry Bonds tied Mark McGwire’s season home run record in 2001 in Houston. A Monday Night Football game in 1972 between the Oilers and the Raiders was so lopsided (Oakland won 34-0) that the camera focused on a bored fan who roused himself enough to flip off the camera.
