GILCHRIST, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon State Police are investigating a weekend accident near Gilchrist in which a pedestrian standing in the middle of Highway 97 was struck by a Ford Explorer. Sgt. David MacKenzie says the accident before 5 a.m. Sunday left 60-year-old Miles Douglas Mattox of Gilchrist dead. A passenger in the vehicle, 56-year-old Robert Saunders, was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. MacKenzie says the road was shrouded in heavy fog at the time of the accident.
