On Monday, three cities — Cloverdale, Petaluma and Rohnert Park — started receiving electricity from Sonoma Clean Power, a public utility created by local governments in 2012. Based in San Francisco, PG&E also handles billing and supplies natural gas. According to PG&E’s preliminary data, 27 percent of the company’s electricity in 2014 came from renewable sources, although that figure does not include the company’s large fleet of hydroelectric dams. Marin County started the state’s first such utility in 2010, after a fierce fight with PG&E.
