Symphony goes contemporary program for the Grove

For its annual visit to Stern Grove, the San Francisco Symphony shakes off the dust and jumps on the bandwagon by turning its attention to living composers. Given the abstract theme of exploring “the connection between orchestral music and the beauty of nature,” conductor Edwin Outwater leads the musicians in reinterpreting the work of the indie-rock band My Brightest Diamond. Along with the hour-long, 13-part song cycle — inspired by poems and illustrations by writer and visual artist Nathaniel Bellows — the afternoon program includes Korngold’s “The Adventures of Robin Hood Suite,” Act 2 of Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” featuring soprano Julie Adams and mezzo-soprano Renée Rapier, and Dvorak’s Symphony No.
