Filly Stays in Vegas debuts with a victory

While each of the other 2-year-old fillies in the 5½-furlong race had one wire-to-wire victory to her credit, Stays in Vegas was making her debut. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer obviously thought a lot of her, because he could have waited for a maiden race July 16 at the State Fair instead of running her in the Juan Gonzalez Memorial. A $40,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland September Sale, Stays in Vegas is owned by Kevin and Kim Nish’s KMN Racing. The fair ends Sunday with four stakes events: two for thoroughbreds and two for Arabians. Smokey Image, a 5-length winner in his debut two weeks ago, heads the Everett Nevin for 2-year-olds, and defending champion Streamside tops the Oak Tree Sprint. Star 3-year-old filly Lady Eli ($3.60) extended her unbeaten record to six wins with an authoritative victory in the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Oaks on Saturday at Belmont Park.
