Washington state officials cheered on Monday as President Obama unveiled the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction plan in American history. Allies of Big Oil and Big Coal in the Rust Belt were groaning. “The President’s plan is nuts,” tweeted House Speaker John Boehner. He charged that the Obama plan, to cut carbon emissions 32 percent from 2005 levels, “will destroy jobs, discourage economic growth and cause energy bills to skyrocket.” Boehner did not mention costs and burdens that climate change is placing on the country.
