PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Utilities are reporting progress in restoring service to tens of thousands of southern New England residents who lost power during a wave of severe thunderstorms. But many will have to wait a bit longer.As of 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, National Grid said about 44,000 Rhode Island customers remained in the dark.
