BERLIN (AP) — Abstract compositions of black lines and rectangles filled with red, blue and yellow highlight a new Piet Mondrian exhibition in Berlin. The show goes far beyond the Dutch artist's iconic works, tracing his stylistic development from the beginning with early works featuring idyllic nature scenes with windmills, willow trees and lawns. About 50 works from the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in the Netherlands are presented in chronological order to trace Mondrian's path from an art student at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam in the late 19th century to his rise to one of the most important artists of classical modernism.
