LGBTQ elderly in King County: A population that’s growing, with health problems and needs support

The arrival of marriage equality in late 2012 featured joyous scenes of elderly gay and lesbian couples, together for decades, tying the knot — in one case with witnesses being a full house at Benaroya Hall attending a Christmas concert by the Seattle Men’s Chorus. But the Seattle City Council is viewing a different picture on Tuesday afternoon, the growing population of LGBTQ elderly who, in words of Councilman Tom Rasmussen, “tend to be alone, tend to have less family support, and are less likely to be married.” Council member Tom Rasmussen:  “The big challenges for anyone are to gain trust and confidence.” Rasmussen is proposing that the city put
