JOHNSON COUNTY — Josef Coufal, a native of Bohemia, arrived in a river bottom area of the Iowa River in 1850. He was 23 when he began farming. As his farm prospered, he bought more and more land. Coufal owned about 1,600 acres in Johnson County as well as a large farm in Iowa County in 1903.
