‘Sweet Charity’ closes Hillbarn’s 75th season

Charity Hope Valentine, a taxi dancer at a seedy ballroom in New York’s Times Square, dreams of a romantic future with Mr. Right, but he proves ever elusive, with one man after another dashing her hopes but never quite extinguishing her optimism. Neil Simon’s witty, Tony Award-winning musical that reimagines Federico Fellini’s “Nights of Cabiria” — with music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields — closes Hillbarn Theatre’s 75th anniversary season on a buoyant note. Monique Hafen is Charity in a cast that also includes David Blackburn as Oscar, the shy accountant who dates her; and Adam Flowers as Vittorio, the movie star who brings some excitement to her life. “Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” “There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This” and “The Rhythm of Life” are among the musical’s memorable songs.
