Franciso Reyes says the transit occurs when Mercury’s orbit takes the innermost planet directly across the solar disk as it passes between the sun and Earth. Usually, Mercury’s orbit takes the planet a little below or above the sun as seen from Earth. But during the transit, the planet will be visible, with the use of a telescope and protective filter, as a black dot crossing the sun.
