Tent camping barred in two Aspen-area campgrounds because of bear encounters

Recent bear encounters have prompted forest officials to bar tent camping at two Aspen-area campgrounds over Independence Day weekend and possibly beyond. Only hard-sided campers are allowed at the Lincoln Gulch and Weller campgrounds in the White River National Forest. Both campgrounds have been the site of dangerous bear interactions in recent weeks, including a Monday night incident at Lincoln Gulch when a black bear pulled the window out of a locked vehicle to climb inside and consume food.
