Report: Anquan Boldin to sign with Lions

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who led the 49ers in receptions and yards in each of his three seasons with the team, is finalizing a one-year deal with the Lions, ESPN reported. Boldin, who will turn 36 in October, had said he’d like to return to the 49ers, but the team will give several young receivers a chance for playing time opposite Torrey Smith in 2016. Boldin had 237 catches, 3,030 yards and 16 touchdowns with the 49ers and was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year after the 2015 season. The loss of Galette is a major blow to Washington’s defense, which added All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman in free agency. The coaching staff’s plan was to keep Galette out of organized team workouts until camp as he dealt with the left Achilles injury. In May, Galette said he was as excited as he has ever been during his football career, and head coach Jay Gruden called him “a kid at Christmas” waiting for his chance to play. Almost any other NFL team would be starting the season with a new head coach. Asked on Tuesday why he’s so patient with a head coach who has a winless record in the playoffs, Brown turned the question around.
