Names & Faces: Steve Spurrier, Cam Newton

The retired college football coach who already has a statue outside Florida’s football stadium and recently had the field named after him, now will serve as ambassador and consultant for the school’s athletic department. Spurrier resigned from a similar position at South Carolina, his last coaching stop, on Friday before the Gators announced his new role at his alma mater. Spurrier expects to work primarily as a fundraiser for the athletic department and help promote the Gators, something he has done as well as anyone for the past 50 years — he was Florida’s first Heisman Trophy winner in 1966 before being drafted by the 49ers, and as head coach from 1990 through 2001, the Gators went 122-27-1 and won a national title. The quarterback’s stellar 2015 season helped him become the first Carolina Panthers player to earn the NFL’s MVP award. “You can throw the comebacks and digs, but what about the check downs and the slants and getting back to the small nuances of the game that make big differences?” One early goal: to get his completion percentage to increase from 58.9 percent to about 65 percent this season.
