A summer visit to the many sides of Telluride

The first trip to Telluride requires no planning. Visitors need only drive into the box canyon with its red and white cliffs, topped by a crown of jagged blue peaks, marvel at its unsurpassed beauty, retrieve their jaw from the valley floor and then repeat the process on all subsequent days of their visit. However the next trip (and believe me, the second you see Telluride in the rear view mirror, you will want to know when you are coming back) might call for a little more scheduling. On a trip this summer, my family and I took in the historic mining town from some new angles, each more gorgeous than the one before. From Above Although we usually stay in the town of Telluride, this summer we stayed about 800 feet higher in the quieter Mountain Village. Worries that we would lose the dramatic views you get in town were erased as soon as I stepped out onto the terrace of the “Sky Pool” at the Madeline Hotel. The Mountain Village, which has its own restaurants, shops and trails, is connected to the town by a free gondola that runs from 7 a.m.
