49ers’ Kelly: no QB controversy; ‘Kap is our No. 2 right now’

With Colin Kaepernick working out in the distance, 49ers head coach Chip Kelly on Monday was in no mood to make a quarterback change despite the inefficiencies of Blaine Gabbert. “Kap is our No. 2 right now,” Kelly told reporters at the 49ers’ training facility. The No. 1 threw for 119 yards in Sunday’s 37-18 beatdown in Seattle in which the 49ers scored all but three of their points in the final quarter. The 49ers host the Cowboys on Sunday, and Kelly is determined to stick with Gabbert, whose quarterback rating (68.6) ranks 30th among 32 qualifying QBs. A day later, after reviewing films, the coach noticed nothing about the performance that would prompt further praise. With Gabbert running the offense, the 49ers failed to convert all 10 third-down situations through three quarters and finished 4-for-15. Kelly still maintains Kaepernick isn’t 100 percent — having spent the offseason recuperating from knee, thumb and shoulder injuries — and isn’t at his playing weight. If Kaepernick isn’t 100 percent, Kelly was asked, why is he listed as the No.
