Man convicted of 1987 murder with Zain testimony to get new trial

By Kate White A Cabell County judge on Thursday overturned the murder conviction of a man serving life in prison for a 1987 killing, finding that testimony given by discredited former State Police serologist Fred Zain tainted his trial. Phillip A. Ward, 51, is entitled to a new trial as "a matter of fundamental fairness," Cabell Circuit Judge Alfred Ferguson wrote. Ward has served 29 years in prison for the killing of his co-worker, Carol Carter.
