FORT LAUDERDALE — Outraged condo residents said no way to a 24-hour emergency medical center in their Galt Ocean Mile neighborhood. The proposal, presented by Commissioner John Herbst, died a quick death after an angry crowd of seniors blasted the city — and Broward Health — for even suggesting they be subjected to what they feared could have turned into a nightmare of traffic jams and round-the-clock sirens. But Fort Lauderdale has since found a new spot for what Broward Health CEO Shane Strum is calling an urgent care center on steroids: Holiday Park. Broward Health is partnering with a new tenant at the park that has yet to break ground, the YMCA. In late 2016, the YMCA worked out a deal with the city to lease land at Holiday Park for 50 years at the price of $1 a year.

It is an offense against the people of Florida for Gov. Ron DeSantis’ appointments to have turned the state Supreme Court into a predictable fountain of right-wing opinions. The latest is its April 1 decision upholding the sweeping new ban on abortion. What’s more worrisome, as we’ve said before, is the voluminous silence from the state’s leading lawyers.

A fisherman recently texted from his boat to ask Boynton Beach chef Jimmy Everett if he was interested in the 80-pound swordfish the captain had reeled in that night.  Everett happily acquired the serendipitous fish and — after calling a couple of other local chefs to take what he could not use — then set about adding a swordfish dish to the next day’s menu at his well-regarded restaurant, Driftwood.  Since opening the restaurant in Boynton Beach in 2018, Everett’s menu has been a dynamic document.

Dear Amy: I have been walking buddies with a neighbor for the last 12 years. We walk together about once a week. While I usually enjoy our time, there have been unsettling emotional outbursts from her, either crying or screaming about one thing or another. She has even yelled at me personally, which was shocking and embarrassing to me, and I admit I have yelled back once or twice – and I am not proud of it.

Q: With the fifteenth pick in the upcoming draft, should the Heat be looking for a particular position player or the best available talent regardless of position? I’m sure the Heat scouts and brain trust are looking at players who they feel can fall to fifteen and undervalued by other teams.

I am a Victoria Park resident and parent of two students at Virginia Shuman Young Elementary (VSY). I urge Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and the community to reject the proposal to relocate the VSY Montessori program and establish it as a traditional boundary school. There are numerous shortcomings with the proposal.
