Buddy system has teams eyeing quarterfinals

C.J. Brim leads Shannon in scoring. (File) By Blake Morgan Daily Journal Basketball life can be better in pairs, at least for two area teams this is the case. The Pontotoc Lady Warriors and Shannon Red Raiders have advanced in to the second round of the MHSAA playoffs behind strong outings from their top two players. Both teams will be hosting as well because of the strong play of both duos throughout the season. Pontotoc will face Ripley tonight in the 4A playoffs for a chance to advance the next round of the playoffs in Jackson. The Lady Warriors will likely need strong performances by the low-post tandem of Jatyjia Jones and Makenzie Lane to advance to the quarterfinals. Opposing coaches have a tough decision to make, Jones can be a matchup problem for smaller defenders because of her size at 5-foot-9 while the biggest player is usually having to guard the 6-foot Lane. Pontotoc defeated Ripley earlier this season 42-39, and that game was played at Ripley.
