I grew up in an era when priests and pastors were known almost exclusively by their surnames. There were no Father Bobs or Pastor Chucks or Reverend Daves in those days. We knew them as Father Hanley, or Reverend Crabtree, or Monsignor Herr. And if you didn’t attach a respectful “sir” when addressing them, you were as likely as not to feel the worse for it. No, the priests and pastors we knew back then didn’t want to be our friends.
