An Akron man wanted in connection with the theft of about $75,000 in cash has been captured by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. Derrick Whatley, 33, was arrested Monday near the 800 block of Fess Avenue in Akron after a tip. He was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and Akron police on aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary charges. Whatley is accused of walking into a West Hill apartment on May 26, strangling and hitting a 50-year-old woman in the face with a gun and stealing the money. The woman’s boyfriend had earlier received a large inheritance. Whatley was featured as the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force’s “Fugitive of the Week” last month.
