‘High Sierra,’ starring Bogart, is a noir as Shakespearean tragedy

In 1941, after a decade in Hollywood mostly as a supporting actor, Humphrey Bogart became a bankable star. The box office breakthrough was John Huston’s directorial debut, “The Maltese Falcon,” but earlier that year Bogart delivered one of his best, most soulful performances in “High Sierra.” Bogart is Roy Earle, fresh out of prison and drawn in to a plan to knock off a casino.
