State confirms third wolf attack on Jackson County ranch this year

Fish and wildlife officials say members of the Rogue pack attacked and killed the third calf in the span of a week at the same Jackson County ranch. The pack, which includes Oregon’s legendary wandering wolf OR-7, killed a calf on Ted Birdseye’s property near Prospect on Jan. 10. According to state investigators, GPS tracking coordinates placed the collared wolf, OR-54, near the kill site at the time of the attack, and officials found “the rib cage, spinal column, both front legs, head and part of the hide present” on Birdseye’s 276-acre ranch the following morning. The confirmed attack came just one day after a separate attack on one of Birdseye’s cattle and is the third known incident in Western Oregon in 2018. Birdseye is working with federal wildlife officials to install electric fences, strobe lights and fladry, a colorful fabric hung on fences, to deter the predators.
