Big Island leads visitor spending in March, first quarter

Visitor spending surged 13.5 percent on the Big Island during the first quarter, leading the four major Islands in tourism gains, according to preliminary statistics released Thursday by the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Visitors spent $772 million on the Big Island during the first three months of the year, while arrivals increased 12.8 percent to 495,558.
