A Crystal Lake native and 2006 Marian Central Catholic High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Makin Island, an amphibious assault ship. Petty Officer 2nd Class Benedicto Savillo is an aviation ordnanceman aboard the ship, which operates out of San Diego. An aviation ordnanceman is responsible for bomb assembly and the testing and preparing of missiles. Savillo credits his success in the Navy to many of the lessons he learned growing up in Crystal Lake. “A lesson from my hometown is to stay humble,” Savillo said.
