Connect to nature and the community by joining the McHenry County Conservation District for a “Weekend of Restoration” event, Camp Hackmatack: Building a new Wildlife Refuge, from 7 p.m. Oct. 12 to noon Oct. 14 at the Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. This award-winning program is a mini vacation that makes a difference. On March 14, 1903, Theodore Roosevelt established the first National Wildlife Refuge “Pelican Island” to protect egrets and other birds from extinction because of plume hunting.
