Colorado paid family leave gets initial approval — with break for smallest businesses

Legislation that would establish a state-run insurance fund for Colorado workers who face an health emergency or need to take care of a sick family member cleared its first test Wednesday after it was amended to provide some relief to small businesses. The bill was approved on a party-line vote during an unprecedented weather event — a bomb cyclone — prompting objections from Republicans and the business community that the hearing wasn’t postponed. Senate Democrats went ahead with it as lights at the Capitol flickered and snow filled the sky outside the august building.
