Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee and one of the central figures in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, died early on Thursday in Baltimore. Cummings died of longstanding health challenges, his office said. He was 68. One of the most powerful Democrats, Cummings had represented Maryland’s 7th congressional district for 23 years.
