In a preview of what may come next from the Supreme Court, a 5-4 decision overruled New York State's rules that are trying to protect its citizens from the coronavirus. In the dissent Chief Justice John Roberts writes, "It is a significant matter to override determinations made by public health officials concerning what is necessary for public safety in the midst of a deadly pandemic." To the rest of the conservative members of the court, religious gatherings override the health and safety of the state. At issue is whether the occupancy caps on religious congregations were more severe than those of comparable activities.
