Rockies Insider: Amid torrid start, Ryan McMahon’s advanced stats reveal even to more revel over

Despite the Rockies’ early struggles, Ryan McMahon alone has been a good reason to watch Colorado. Through 13 games, the versatile, slugging infielder is second in the National League with six homers, highlighted by a three-homer performance at Coors Field. He’s also tied for second in the NL in extra-base hits with 10, tied for second in total bases with 37 and is third in slugging percentage at .755. But the sabermetrics reveal even more about McMahon’s torrid start, and if he keeps it up, the 26-year-old may very well find himself repping the home team at the MLB All-Star Game come July. McMahon ranks 14th among all MLB hitters in barrels per plate appearance at 10.9%, and is 81st percentile in average exit velocity, 82nd percentile in strikeout percentage (an issue that’s plagued him in the past), 88th percentile in xSlugging (which takes into account the quality of contact instead of outcomes), and 99th percentile in outs above average. OAA is a range-based metric of skill that shows how many outs a player has saved relative to other players — meaning McMahon is playing Gold Glove-caliber defense so far. — Kyle Newman, The Denver Post If you enjoy The Denver Post’s sports coverage, we have a new subscription offer for you!
