As Dolphins self-scout on bye week, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa looks to compound improved play for final stretch

As the Miami Dolphins get a long-awaited weekend off from the grueling NFL schedule before the stretch run, it’s an opportunity for the team to self-scout itself and for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to gather himself for the key four-game stretch that will determine his team’s fate. Tagovailoa has gone through a tumultuous second NFL season that involved him twice missing time with injuries, dealing with the rumors of the team’s interest in trading for embattled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson and playing without multiple other key contributors on offense due to injury. Now, Tagovailoa, whose improved play despite it all has elevated the Dolphins back into the AFC playoff picture behind a five-game winning streak, gets his chance to decompress before leading his team toward the final push. Part of the self-scouting process for the quarterback is to analyze how he’s doing in avoiding tells that can tip off opposing defenses when they scout him, but a lot of it is just improving his own game. “Just finding ways to get completions, get the ball out of my hands on third down,” Tagovailoa said of the key things he’s focusing on.
