Former Lewiston soccer star dies from injuries after being hit by car in Saudi Arabia

LEWISTON — Former Lewiston soccer star Zakariya Abdullahi has died after he and his brother were hit by a car in Saudi Arabia. A star player on the Blue Devils’ 2015 state championship team, Abdullahi was on a religious pilgrimage to Mecca with his mother and older brother when we got hit by a car while walking on a sidewalk. Abdullahi suffered a serious head injury and was in a coma, with a plan to transfer him to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. A GoFundMe that was set up to help with Abdullahi’s medical bills had raised $124,924. The 2015 soccer team featured players from Somalia, Kenya and Congo, elevating an already-good team to the state championship. Abdullahi was living in Minnesota with his mother before the pilgrimage.
