Conservative Factions Dominate Iran's Run-off Elections

Jordan's military says infiltrators from Syria have clashed with Jordanian soldiers near the border. One infiltrator was killed and two wounded. The attackers opened fire on a border post on Wednesday, according to a Jordanian military spokesman. Soldiers returned the fire. The spokesman would not say how many infiltrators were involved or disclose other details.

A senior police official says militants attacked a military convoy with rocket-propelled grenades and other heavy weapons in northwest Pakistan, killing six soldiers. Shafiullah Khan says two soldiers were wounded in the attack Wednesday, 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the main northwest city of Peshawar. Two vehicles were destroyed.

A network of human rights groups on Wednesday criticized plans to include Chadian troops in a new U. N. peacekeeping force for Mali while Chad's military remains on a U. N. 'list of shame' for child recruitment. But U. N. officials made clear they had no intention of excluding a country whose soldiers are considered among the best African desert fighters.

Prosecutors in the Sept. 11 war crimes case at Guantanamo are asking a judge to allow secret pretrial hearings that would exclude even the defendants. Justice Department attorney Joanna Baltes says U. S. law would allow hearings without the defendants to protect national security. But lawyers for the five defendants say there is no legal basis to keep them out.

Chilean protesters have thrown eggs at a conservative presidential candidate after he performed a Zumba dance. It seems they objected more to Pablo Lungueira's politics than his dancing ability. Local radio Bio Bio reports that construction workers threw eggs at Longueira Wednesday after his performance at a campaign event in the capital of Santiago.
